Two Types of Elastics
When we use the word ‘elastics’ they are referring to tiny rubber bands. These can either be the tiny coloured elastics that tie around the brackets or ones that we provide you in a small pack. The coloured elastics are placed by the orthodontist and left in place until the next visit. You can change the colour of these elastics at each appointment.
The other type are little elastics that apply pressure to the teeth in certain directions that braces alone can not. These elastics are connected to small hooks on your braces or Invisalign trays. The elastics can be taken in and out, and we will instruct you on how often to wear them. We will also demonstrate in a mirror how to take them in and out. It takes a few days to get a hang of these but after a while they can be easily placed and removed without using a mirror.

What if my elastics break?
If your elastics break, simply replace them with a new one. If you run out of elastics, call to the practice and we will give you a new pack. Although it is not common for elastics to break, sometimes opening too wide will cause it to tear. If your elastics continue to break, contact us and we will provide you with a more appropriate elastic size.
