What are dental implants?

A dental implant can be used to replace a root of a missing tooth. Structurally it looks like a screw, made from biocompatible titanium.

A dental implant is gently seated in the jaw, where it provides a solid foundation for a prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, or implant retained denture.

An implant can replace one or more missing teeth.

When implants are used to replace missing teeth, they aim to improve your health, your chewing function, your speech, your aesthetic facial appearance, your smile whilst overall improving your confidence.

Why choose dental implants?

Dental implants are an excellent and preferable treatment option for replacing missing teeth for a variety of reasons:

FIXED

They are a fixed solution, thus providing great comfort and confidence. You cannot move or remove them, which reduces embarrassment of a traditional denture prosthesis.

PRESERVATION OF REMAINING TEETH

They eliminate the need for preparing/cutting natural healthy teeth, thus preserving remaining healthy teeth and reducing risk to adjacent teeth.

PRESERVATION OF JAWBONE

Implants help to preserves surrounding bone, this provides benefit to adjacent teeth long-term.

YOUR SMILE COULD MAKE YOU HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER

A smile speaks a thousand words, it’s a universal language. Improving your smile and achieving confidence when you smile can improve mood and reduce stress, an overall health benefit to yourself and also benefit those around you.

COMFORT, SENSATION AND LOOK LIKE NATURAL TEETH

Implants attach to jawbone and stay fixed in position allowing you to smile naturally. Implant restored prosthesis function like natural teeth. You can eat and bite as normal, diet is not restricted. The prosthesis (tooth) should appear in perfect harmony  and lining up naturally with the rest of your smile, matching in colour, form and size, as it flows from the gumline aesthetically like a natural tooth.

SUCCESSFUL AND LONGTLASTING

At Balbriggan Braces we use Straumann® implants. These implants have scientifically proven long-term success with uncompromising quality for decades.

“Long-term clinical studies on implants show success and survival rates of 97% to 100%”-Straumann®.

ANTI AGING EFFECT

Implants fuse with jaw bone, as a result this preserves jaw bone, leading to

less resorption of jaw bone. This benefits by giving support to surrounding facial structures, slowing down the aging process and aging aesthetic profile.

What Will Happen?

Standard Dental Implant Treatment Procedure

1. Consultation and examination

Dr Oakley will assess your dental and medical history, performing a thorough clinical assessment. Clarify your expectations and explain your different treatment options.

To be a suitable candidate for implant treatment you need enough healthy bone to anchor an implant. Radiographs and CBCT scans show bone quality and quantity. If there is not enough bone, there are options to build up bone again.

2. Tooth extraction (if applicable)

If it is untreatable, a tooth will need to be extracted under local anaesthetic.

3. Bone augmentation in the extracted area is sometimes required.

Now the gap needs some time to heal. This can take a few months, depending on your situation, commonly it takes three months. During this time, you may not want to expose a visible tooth gap, and you can opt for a temporary acrylic prosthesis, which may be anchored to the neighbouring teeth.

4. Implant surgery

To place your implant, Dr Oakley will open your gum and drill an access where a dental implant will sit. Then the implant will be slowly and gently inserted into the bone. This is carried out under adequate local anaesthetic so you will not feel any pain.

On top of your implant, Dr Oakley will place a healing abutment. This helps to shape your gums during healing.

If you are wearing a temporary prosthesis, this can continue to be worn during the healing period prior to the final prosthesis attachment.

Now it will take time for the bone and soft tissues to properly heal around the implant. This will depend on your treatment plan, on average healing time is 3 months, however and can range from 2 to 9 months.

5. Impression taking and prosthetic restoration production

When the implant has completely healed, (approximately 3 months) it will be time to start the restorative step.

Dr Oakley will take an impression of the implant to provide the laboratory with the necessary information about the implant position. This means that your teeth and Jaw will be digitally scanned, or a silicon impression taken. You and Dr Oakley will select the tooth shade, so that the prosthetic restoration blends with the neighbouring teeth shade.

This impression serves as the basis for the dental laboratory to produce the prosthetic restoration exactly to the shape, size and shade of your removed tooth.

6. Prosthetic restoration fitting

Approximately 5 weeks later, when the final prosthetic restoration is ready, Dr Oakley will fix it to the respective implant(s), and make the necessary adjustments, ensuring your bite is comfortable, functional and aesthetically as planned.

From now on you will be able to eat, smile and laugh naturally again.

FAQs

Why are Straumann® implants so sophisticated and considered to be the implant of choice?

For decades Straumann® has innovated in design, technology, materials, software, processes and treatment procedures in dental implant solutions. They have set high global standards for implants.

What risk are involved when placing dental implants?

Today, implant therapy is an established standard for tooth replacement. It is well documented that implants area safe and successful method of treatment. Although a common treatment, several factors can affect the long-term health of dental implants, such as quality of jaw bone, poor dental health and plaque control, pre-existing medical conditions, gum disease smoking and grinding.

As with all treatment procedures, there is a degree of surgical risk when an implant is placed. Depending on the area being treated, minor risks can include bruising, bleeding, swelling, pain or discomfort. Major risks are very few and rare. Dr Oakley will perform a complex and thorough assessment to ensure implant treatment is the right choice for you.

Is surgery painful?

While discomfort during and after dental implant surgery is possible, it’s generally manageable with local anesthesia during the procedure and pain medication afterward.

The Treatmant Process

Today’s techniques are being continually improved to reduce discomfort and enhance recovery. Dr Oakley is trained to provide the best care and use the most innovative techniques to insert implants. Implants are inserted under adequate local anaesthetic to avoid discomfort during treatment.

Is there any age limitation to dental implant treatment?

For young patients it is possible to insert implants as soon as your jaw has stopped growing. At the other end of the spectrum, there is no age limit, given of course that you don’t display any significant medical risk factors and are a suitable candidate for implant treatment.

What if I don’t have enough bone?

It may turn out that you don’t have enough bone available to ensure the secure placement of dental implants. With the help of bone augmentation (Bone Graft) – an established treatment used to build up bone – implants can still be placed. We offer a wide range of synthetic and natural biomaterials designed to build up bone.

What kind of care is required after my treatment is complete?

As always, oral hygiene is very important to the health of your teeth. This is even more true after you have an implant. Diligent oral hygiene helps to ensure the healthiest and fastest recovery. You will need to continue to visit your regular general dentist for check-ups on your implants and natural teeth.
