The clear aligner system

Invisalign

Most people have heard of Invisalign as it is the most well known Clear Orthodontic Aligner. Dr James and Dr Brid offer Invisalign at our clinic as well as some other cutting-edge Aligner brands such as Reveal and Clear wonder. At your free Consultation your options will be discussed and the aligner system to best meet your needs will be chosen. Prices vary slightly depending on the system. You will be involved in all the decision making.

Clear Aligners are a system that uses a very thin clear plastic gumshield-like brace worn over the teeth. These aligners are manufactured to fit your teeth exactly and to move your teeth into their new position. This new position is pre-planned with you and the expected result can be visualize on a computer prior to you embarking on treatment.

A 3D scan, photographs and X-Rays are taken in the planning stage.

Once you are happy with the proposed treatment a series of aligners will be made in the chosen lab. Each one will move your teeth a little bit towards the end position. You will change over these aligners yourself at home and visit the practice intermittently to have adjustments and monitor the progress.

Your aligners are taken out to eat and for cleaning. We advise they are worn for 22 hours per day. You wear them day and night. The aligners are clear and slim and so they are virtually invisible.

Invisalign FAQs

How long will treatment take start to finish?

Treatment time will depend on the complexity of your case and how much movement is needed. You will be informed of treatment time before you go ahead with treatment. Treatment time is generally comparable or quicker than traditional braces.

How often do I need to attend for appointments.

You will be asked to change your aligner to the next in the series every two weeks yourself at home. This means you will only need to attend the clinic every 6-8 weeks to monitor the progress.

Is the Invisalign treatment painful?

Most people will experience some minor discomfort for a few days when they move on to their next aligner. This is normally described at a pressure feeling and passes after a few days. The feeling is a sign that the aligners are working and is a normal part of the process.

When treatment is complete, will I need to wear a retainer?

As with any Orthodontic treatment, it is strongly advised that you wear a clear plastic retainer at night, time long-term to ensure there is no unwanted movement of the teeth. If you want your teeth to remain in their ideal position, it’s best to wear a retainer as directed. We can provide permanent retainers that are secured and bonded behind the teeth, but we also strongly advise that the provided plastic Essix retainer is worn at night long-term.

Am I suitable for aligner/Invisalign treatment?

Not every person is suitable for Invisalign treatment but with the advances in technology the vast majority of adults are now suitable. At our consultation and records appointments, we carry out a full screen of your Oral health to examine your suitability for treatment.
